50)chevron:
The Chevron Cars are part of an advertising
campaign of the Chevron Corporation consisting of television spots, print ads, billboards, and
toy cars available at Chevron retail locations.
51)Chrysler:
Chrysler
Group LLC is an
American automaker, in a strategic global alliance with Italian manufacturer Fiat,
since 2009.
Chrysler was first organized as
the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. Its
core brands today are: Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, SRT, Fiat, and Mopar
vehicles and products. The Company is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a Detroit suburb.
On June 10, 2009, Chrysler LLC
emerged a reorganization overseen
by the U.S. government. It became Chrysler Group LLC, in alliance with and
owned by the Italian automaker Fiat, The company was founded by Walter Chrysler (1875–1940) on June 6, 1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company(est. 1904) was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation.
Walter Chrysler arrived at the
ailing Maxwell-Chalmers company in the early 1920s. He was hired to overhaul the
company's troubled operations (after a similar rescue job at the Willys-Overland car company). In late 1923 production of the
Chalmers automobile was ended.
In January 1924, Walter Chrysler
launched the well-received Chrysler automobile. The Chrysler was a 6-cylinder
automobile, designed to provide customers with an advanced, well-engineered
car, but at a more affordable price than they might expect. (Elements of this
car are traceable to a prototype which had been under development at Willys during
Chrysler's tenure). The original
1924 Chrysler included a carburetor air filter, high compression engine, full
pressure lubrication, and an oil filter, features absent from most autos at the
time. Among the innovations in
its early years were the first practical mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic
brakes, a system nearly completely engineered by Chrysler with patents assigned
to Lockheed, and rubber engine mounts to reduce vibration. Chrysler also
developed a wheel with a ridged rim, designed to keep a deflated tire from
flying off the wheel. This wheel was eventually adopted by the auto industry
worldwide.
52)citroen:
Citroën is a major French automobile
manufacturer, part of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group.
Founded in 1919 by French
industrialist André-Gustave Citroën (1878–1935), Citroën was the first mass-production car
company outside the USA and
pioneered the modern concept of creating a sales and services network that
complements the motor car.Within eight years Citroën had become Europe's
largest car manufacturer and the 4th largest in the world.
Citroën earned a reputation for
innovation and revolutionary engineering, which is reflected in the company's
slogan "Créative Technologie". Its history of innovation began with
its founding, when André-Gustave Citroën introduced the first industrial mass
production of vehicles outside the United States, a technique he developed
while mass-producing armaments for the French military in World War I. In
1924, Citroën produced Europe’s first all-steel-bodied car, the B-10. In 1934, Citroën secured its
reputation for innovation with its Traction
Avant, not only the world's first mass-produced
front-wheel drive car, but also one of the first cars to feature a monocoque-type body. In 1954 Citroën produced the world's
first hydropneumatic self-levelling
suspension system, then
in 1955 the revolutionary Citroën
DS, the first European production car with disc brakes. In 1967,
Citroën introduced the first swiveling headlights in several models, allowing
for greater visibility on winding roads.
The brand celebrated its 90th
Anniversary in 2009, André
Citroën built armaments for France during World War I; after the war, however, he had a factory without a
product. In 1919, the business started to produce automobiles, beginning with the conventional Type A.
The Type A was designed by Jules
Salomon, Chief Design Officer from Le Zèbre.
That same year, André Citroën
briefly negotiated with General Motors on a proposed sale of the Citroën company to GM. The deal nearly closed, but GM
ultimately decided that its management and capital would be too overstretched
by the takeover. Citroën thus
remained independent for many years to come.

53)cizeta:
Cizeta Automobili srl of Modena, Italy is a car manufacturer set up in the
late 1980s by Claudio Zampolli (an Italian Ferrari dealer) and the record producer Giorgio Moroder.
The name "Cizeta" comes
from the Italian pronunciation of co-founder Claudio Zampolli's initials
(C.Z.). Moroder became involved into the project when he took his Lamborghini Countach for a service at Zampolli's garage.
Their only product, the Cizeta-Moroder
V16T, featured a technically advanced transverse configured sixteen cylinder
engine. Styled by Marcello
Gandini, the body was strikingly similar to the later Lamborghini Diablo's as Gandini first
proposed the design to the then Chrysler-owned
Lamborghini, which altered the concept significantly. Gandini then brought the
original Diablo design to Cizeta. The prototype was the only car to carry the
"Cizeta-Moroder" badge, as Giorgio Moroder pulled out of the Cizeta
project in 1990. The prototype remains with Giorgio Moroder to this day.
No production Cizeta was ever
badged "Cizeta-Moroder" but merely "Cizeta V16T". Only 8
cars were built before the shutdown of the firm in 1994. Subsequently, 3 more
cars were completed (two more coupe, and one spyder) in 1999 and 2003.
Mr. Zampolli moved to the USA after
the company went bankrupt in Italy and has set up a new company in California, called Cizeta Automobili
USA. He currently services exotic cars as well as continuing to build (on
demand) the Cizeta V16T.
The V16T is illegal to drive or
to even own in the United States because it does not meet emissions and safety
standards. One was seized by United States Immigration
and Customs Enforcement on
December 7, 2009.
54)Connaught:
Connaught Engineering, often
referred to simply as Connaught,
was a Formula One and sports car constructor from theUnited Kingdom . Their cars participated in 18 Grands Prix, entering a
total of 52 races with their A, B, and C Type Formula 2 and Formula 1 Grand
Prix Cars. They achieved 1 "podium" (a placing in the first three)
and scored 17 championship points. The nameConnaught is a pun on Continental Autos, the garage
in Send, Surrey, which specialised in sales and repair of European sports
cars such as Bugatti, and where the cars were built.
Prior to the single-seat racing
cars they built a small number of road going sports cars developed on the Lea-Francis Sports Chassis, which achieved
considerable competition success. These were of types L2 and L3, and three
examples of the stark Cycle Winged L3/SR Sports Racer. Two sports cars, based
on the A Type Formula 2 cars, the ALSRs were also built for competition work.
In 2004, the Connaught name was
revived by Connaught Motor
Company for their Type D Syracuse
and Type D-H hybrid supercars.
55)cooper:
The Cooper
Car Company was founded in
1946 by Charles Cooper and his sonJohn Cooper. Together
with John's boyhood friend, Eric
Brandon, they began by building racing cars in
Charles' small garage in Surbiton, Surrey, England in 1946. Through the 1950s and early 1960s, they reached auto racing's highest levels as their rear-engined, single-seat cars
altered the face of Formula
One and the Indianapolis
500, and their Mini
Cooper dominated Rally
racing. Thanks in part to Cooper's legacy,Britain remains the home of a thriving racing industry, and the
Cooper name lives on in the Cooper versions of the Mini (BMW) production cars that are still built in England but are now
owned and marketed by BMW.
The first cars built by the Coopers were single-seat 500cc Formula Three racing cars
driven by John Cooper and Eric
Brandon and powered by a JAP motorcycle engine. Since materials were in short supply immediately
after World War II, the prototypes were constructed by joining two old Fiat Topolino front-ends together. According to John Cooper, the stroke
of genius that would make the Coopers an automotive legend—the location of the
engine behind the driver—was merely a practical matter at the time. Because the
car was powered by a motorcycle engine, they believed it was more convenient to
have the engine in the back, driving a chain.
56)cord:
Cord was the brand
name of an American automobile company from Connersville, Indiana, manufactured by
the Auburn Automobile Company
from 1929 through 1932 and again in 1936 and 1937.
The Cord Corporation was founded
and run by E. L. Cord as a holding company for his many
transportation interests, including Auburn. Cord was noted for its innovative
technology and streamlined designs. Cord had a philosophy to
build truly different, innovative cars, believing they would also sell well and
turn a profit
Cord innovations include front-wheel drive on the L-29 and hidden headlamps on the 810 and 812.
Front-wheel drive became common
in the United States only in the 1980s, though Citroën introduced the Traction Avant in 1934,Ford offered it in certain models of its
German-built Taunus, and General Motors sold the front wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronado in 1966 and Cadillac Eldorado in 1967. As personal luxury cars,
these two GM models, especially the Toronado, were undoubtedly influenced by
Cord.
57)Corre la licorne:
Corre La
Licorne was a
French car maker founded 1901 in Levallois-Perret by Jean-Marie Corre. The first cars
were namedCorre, but racing successes by a driver called Waldemar
Lestienne, who came from an old family with a crest featuring a unicorn, led to
the company adopting the name Corre
La Licorne. Nevertheless this was a long name for a small car, and by the
1950s, even in France, the car was generally know simply as the Licorne.
Business began with the
production of tricycles and a single-cylinder quadricycle single-cylinder cabriolet using De Dion-Bouton components. Early sales
volumes were modest. To give greater prominence to the brand, the company began
to participate in competition, and racing victories achieved, in particular in
1903 by the driver Waldemar Lestienne, gave the company valuable recognition.
Sales improved and were soon challenging those of longer established brands
such as Renault, Peugeot and De
Dion-Bouton.
The company survived the First
World War and the Great
Depression, but by the end of the Second
World War it was placed firmly in
the second rank of France's surviving auto-makers. During the war, production
was limited to a small number of cars of a single model with electric
propulsion, using a mechanism devised by Charles Mildé and Louis Kriéger who
had been pioneers of electrically powered cars before the First World War. The Licorne 6/8 hp sedan on which
the car was based was a conventionally sized small car, so significantly
heavier than the cycle cars more usually associated with electric cars in the
1940s. Nevertheless a range of 90
kilometres (60 miles) and a cruising speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) were
quoted. A light van using the
same chassis and running gear was also advertised.
After the war the
company was not one of the automakers included in the Pons Plan. The Pons Plan reflected government
determination to structure the French auto-industry according to priorities
determined by politicians and civil servants: exclusion from it created great
difficulties in obtaining necessary permissions and materials.
The company nevertheless took a
stand at the Paris Motor Show in October 1947 and exhibited the
Licorne Typ 164 LR. Derived from
a pre-war car, this was a 8CV medium-sized (by the standards of that time)
two-door saloon resembling a slightly more stylish version of the Renault Juvaquatre and powered by a four-cylinder 1,450
cc engine. The top speed of
90 km/h (56 mph) was
adequate though not, even in 1947, stunning. Beside the saloon was displayed a
similarly powered cabriolet model which derived from the Licorne Type 415 of
1939.
The models exhibited in 1947
never went into production. In 1950 the business closed.
58)corvette:
The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car by the Chevrolet division of General
Motors (GM) that has been produced in six generations. The first
model, a convertible, was designed by Harley
Earl and introduced at the GM
Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. Myron Scott is credited for
naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette. Originally
built in Flint, Michigan and St.
Louis, Missouri, the Corvette is currently
manufactured in Bowling
Green, Kentucky and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The National
Corvette Museum documents the car's worldwide history, hosts
exhibits, tours and the annual anniversary celebration
The first generation Corvette was introduced late in the 1953 model year and ended in
1962. It was often referred to as the "solid-axle" models because theindependent
rear suspension did not debut until the 1963 Sting Ray model.300 hand-built
polo white Corvette convertibles were produced for the 1953 model year. The 1955 model offered a
265 cu in (4.34 L) V8
engine as an option; however, the first seven off the production line
featured the standard "Blue Flame" Inline-6. The 1954 Corvette was
the origin of a two-door wagon concept
car which theChevrolet Nomad was built off of. Early production Corvettes were also
fitted with the Chevrolet Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission.
Production of the 2014 Corvette is estimated to begin in
August or September 2013. Corvette Bowling Green, Kentucky Assembly Plant tours
should begin again about September or October 2013. As noted previously, the
official announcement date for the 2014 Corvette will be on the 13th of
January, 2013.
59)covini :
is an Italian 2-seat, 2-door sports coupé with a removable roof section. Inspiration for the car was
taken from the 1976 Tyrrell
P34, which had two pairs of smaller front wheels, a principle
applied to the C6W. The project was started in 1974 but abandoned shortly
after, and left dormant into the 1980s due to the lack of availability of low-profile tires at the time. In
2003 the project was revived and in 2004 the C6W was shown in prototype form.
In 2005 a slightly revised version debuted at the Salon International de l'Auto, featuring new wheels, new roof structure and a refreshed
interior, and went into limited production of 6-8 cars per year, as a result of
a tie-up between PMI and Covini
Engineering. The car features a rear, 4200 cc
8-cylinder engine and has a top speed of 186 mph (299 km/h).
Tha C6W was built with safety,
increased braking, and directional stability in mind.
Because there are four front
tires, there is less chance of loss of control due to one front tire deflating
as well as less risk of aquaplaning due to the front axle set clearing the road
for the following axle set. In addition, having six wheels instead of four
produces better braking due to 100% more contact patch and braking components
on front axles and better grip. The manufacturer claims the design produces
less understeer than conventional
designs, and suspension produces less turbulence from potholes and bumps in the
road because of the increased surface area. It
is hypothesised the increased grip of each tire may mean that the car can
achieve greater cornering speeds.
However, having more wheels means
more tires, brake pads, rotors, wearable front suspension components to
maintain, plus more time intensive front tire rotation procedure (dismount and
remount four directional tires on opposite side, drive tires are not able to be
rotated to front due to size difference).
Although the car is very light
overall, at less than 1,200 kg (2,646 lb), the added weight of
additional wheels and steering effort result in less steering feedback to
driver than a car of comparable performance using conventional design.
60)crossley:
Crossley
Motors was a
British motor vehicle manufacturer based in Manchester,
England. They produced approximately 19,000 high quality cars from 1904
until 1938, 5,500 buses from 1926 until 1958 and 21,000 goods and
military vehicles from 1914 to 1945.
Crossley Brothers, originally
manufacturers of textile machinery and rubber processing plant, began the
licensed manufacture of the Otto internal combustion engine before 1880. The
firm started car production in 1903, building around 650 vehicles in their
first year.
The company was originally
created as a division of engine builders Crossley Brothers, but from 1910
became a stand-alone company. Although founded as a car maker, they were major
suppliers of vehicles to British forces during the First World War, and in the
1920s moved into bus manufacture. With re-armament in the 1930s, car-making was
run down, and stopped completely in 1936. During the Second World War output
was again concentrated on military vehicles. Bus production resumed in 1945 but
no more cars were made. The directors decided in the late 1940s that the
company was too small to survive alone and agreed a take over by AEC. Production at the Crossley
factories finally stopped in 1958.
Crossley Motors
Ltd was first registered on 11 April 1906 (and re-registered with a different
company number in 1910) as the vehicle manufacturing arm of Crossley Brothers . The first car was actually
built in 1904 and exhibited at the Paris
Motor Show in 1905, but the parent company saw a future for these new
machines and decided a separate company was required, Although no longer
trading, the company was never formally wound up. In 1969 AEC's new owner, British Leyland , restarted the company with
a new name – Leyland
National– and production of single-decker buses
recommenced.
61)dacia:
Automobile Dacia S.A. is a Romanian car manufacturer,
named for the historic
region that constitutes much of present-day Romania. It is now a
subsidiary of the French carmaker Renault
Automobile Dacia company was founded in 1966 under the name Uzina de Autoturisme Pitești (UAP).
The main Dacia factory was built in 1968, in Colibaşi (now called Mioveni), near Piteşti. Dacia acquired the tooling and basic designs of the Renault 12. However, until the tooling was ready it was decided to
produce the Renault 8 under licence; it was known as the Dacia 1100. From 1968
to 1972, some 44,000 were produced, with a very minor cosmetic change to the
front in early 1970. Also produced in very limited numbers was the 1100S, with twin headlamps and
a more powerful engine, used by the police and in motor racing.
62)Daewoo:
the Daewoo
Group was a major South Korean chaebol (conglomerate). It was founded on 22 March 1967 as Daewoo Industrial and was dismantled by the Korean
government in 1999. Prior to the Asian
Financial Crisis of 1997, Daewoo was the second largest conglomerate in
Korea after Hyundai Group, followed by LG
Group and Samsung
Group. There were about 20 divisions under the Daewoo
Group, some of which survive today as independent companies.
The Daewoo Group was founded by Kim Woo-jung in March 1967. He was the son of the
Provincial Governor of Daegu. He
graduated from the Kyonggi High School, then finished with an Economics Degree
at Yonsei University in Seoul.
During the 1960s, after the end
of the Syngman Rhee government, the new government of Park Chung Hee intervened to promote growth and
development in the country. It increased access to resources, promoted exports,
financed industrialization, and provided protection from competition to the
chaebol in exchange for a company's political support. In the beginning, the
Korean government instigated a series of five-year plans under which the
chaebol were required to achieve a number of basic objectives.
Daewoo did not become a major
player until the second five-year plan. Daewoo benefited from
government-sponsored cheap loans based on potential export profits. The company
initially concentrated on labor-intensive clothing and textile industries that
provided high profit margins because of South Korea's large and relatively
inexpensive workforce.
The third and fourth of the
five-year plans occurred from 1973 to 1981. During this period, the country's
labor force was in high demand. Competition from other countries began eroding
Korea's competitive edge. The government responded to this change by
concentrating its efforts on mechanical and electrical engineering,
shipbuilding, petrochemicals, construction, and military initiatives. At the
end of this period, the government forced Daewoo into shipbuilding. Kim was
reluctant to enter this industry, but Daewoo soon earned a reputation for
producing competitively priced ships and oil rigs.
During the next decade, the
Korean government became more liberal in its economic policies. Small private
companies were encouraged, protectionist import restrictions were loosened, and
the government reduced positive discrimination (affirmative action), to
encourage free market trade and to force the chaebol to be more aggressive
abroad. Daewoo responded by establishing a number of joint ventures with U.S. and
European companies. It expanded exports of machine tools, defense products
(under the S&T Daewoo company), aerospace interests, and semiconductor
design and manufacturing. Eventually, it began to build civilian helicopters
and airplanes, priced considerably cheaper than those produced by its U.S.
counterparts. It also expanded efforts in the automotive industry and was
ranked as the seventh largest car exporter and the sixth largest car
manufacturer in the world. Throughout this period, Daewoo experienced great
success at turning around faltering companies in Korea.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, the
Daewoo Group also produced consumer electronics, computers, telecommunication products, construction equipment,
buildings, and musical instruments (Daewoo Piano).
63)DAF:
DAF Trucks NV is a Dutch truck manufacturing
company and a division of PACCAR, (Pacific Car and Foundry Company). Its headquarters and main plant are in Eindhoven. Cabs and axle assemblies are produced at its Westerlo plant in Belgium. Some of the truck models sold with the DAF brand are
designed and built by Leyland
Trucks at their Farington plant in Preston, England.
The plant also produces Foden and Leyland badged vehicles. Due to its
commercial unpopularity, only military vehicles carry the, once proud, Leyland
badging.
In 1967 DAF opened a new plant in Born for car production. The 44 was
the first model to be produced there.
In 1972, International Harvester of Chicago, IL bought a 33% stake in
DAF (with the Dutch government holding 25% and the Van Doorne family holding
the remaining 42%), forming a joint-venture. This agreement lasted until 1981.
DAF sold its passenger car
division, along with what is now the NedCar factory in Born, in 1975 to the Swedish company Volvo Cars, leaving DAF to concentrate
on its successful line of lorrys.
In 1987 DAF merged with the Leyland Trucks division of Rover Group, and was floated on the
Dutch stock exchange as DAF
NV. The new company traded as Leyland
DAF in the UK, and as DAF elsewhere.
64)Daihatsu:
Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. Is the oldest Japanese car manufacturer, mostly known for its range of smaller models
and off-road vehicles. The headquarters are located in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture.
Daihatsu was formed in 1951 as a
successor to Hatsudoki Seizo Co. Ltd, founded in 1907, as part of Hatsudoki's
major restructure.
During the 1960s, Daihatsu began
exporting its range to Europe where it did not have major sales
success until well into the 1980s. Since February 1992, Toyota distributes Daihatsu models as part of
its North American distribution. In Japan, many of
Daihatsu's models are also known as .
Daihatsu Diesel Motor
Manufacturing Company was formed
in 1966 as an affiliate company to produce marine
engines and diesel generators.
In January 2011, Daihatsu
announced that it would pull out of Europe by 2013, citing the persistently
strong yen, which makes it
difficult for the company to make a profit from its export business.
65)Daimler:
The Daimler Motor Company Limited was an independent British
motor vehicle manufacturer founded in London by H J Lawson in 1896,
which set up its manufacturing base in Coventry. The right to the use of the name Daimler had been
purchased simultaneously from Gottlieb
Daimler and Daimler
Motoren Gesell schaft of Cannstatt, Germany. As of 2011, the brand appears to be dormant.
The Daimler Motor Company Limited is still registered as active and accounts
are filed each year though it is currently marked "non-trading".
All the Daimler shares were
purchased from BSA by Jaguar Cars in 1960. After the introduction of the Daimler DR450 new models used Jaguar bodies with
Daimler grilles and badging. Daimler
remains in the ownership of Jaguar Cars which now belongs to Tata Group of India.
Before 5 October 2007 Jaguar,
while still controlled by Ford, reached agreement to permit then de-merging Daimler Chrysler to extend its use of the name Daimler. The announcement of
this agreement was delayed until the end of July 2008 and made by Jaguar's new
owner, Tata.
As of 2008, Jaguar's use of the
Daimler brand was limited to one model, the Super
Eight
66)datsun:
Datsun is an automobile marque. The name was created in
1931 by the DAT Motorcar Co. for a new car model, spelling it as "Datson"
to indicate its smaller size when compared to the existing, larger DAT car. In
1934, after Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. took control of DAT Motorcar Co., the last syllable of
Datson was changed to "sun", because "son" also means
"loss" in Japanese , and also to honour the sun depicted in the
national flag, hence the name "Datsun" : Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in
March 1986. The Datsun name is most famous for the 510, Fairlady roadsters
and later the Fairlady coupes. On March
20, 2012, it was announced that Nissan will revive the brand for use in Indonesia, India and Russia.
The firm was renamed Kaishinsha Motorcar Co. in 1918, seven
years after their establishment and again, in 1925, to DAT Motorcar Co. DAT
Motors constructed trucks in addition to the DAT passenger cars. In fact, their
output focused on trucks since there was almost no consumer market for
passenger cars at the time. Beginning in 1918, the first DAT trucks were
assembled for the military market. The low demand from the military market
during the 1920s forced DAT to consider merging with other automotive
industries. In 1926 the Tokyo-based DAT Motors merged with the Osaka-based Jitsuyo
Jidosha also known as Jitsuyo Motors (established 1919, as a Kubota subsidiary)
to become DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Osaka until 1932. (Jitsuyo Jidosha began producing a
three-wheeled vehicle with an enclosed cab called the Gorham in 1920, and the
following year produced a four-wheeled version. From 1923 to 1925, the company
produced light cars and trucks under the name of Lila.
67) De dion bouton:
De
Dion-Bouton was a
French automobile manufacturer and railcar manufacturer operating from 1883 to
1932. The company was founded by the Marquis Jules-Albert de Dion, Georges Bouton, and Bouton's
brother-in-law Charles Trépardoux.
The company was formed after de
Dion in 1881 saw a toy locomotive in a store window and asked the
toymakers to build another. Engineers Bouton and Trépardoux had been making a
starvation living on scientific toys at a shop in the Passage de Léon, close to
the "rue de la Chapelle" in Paris. Trépardoux
had long dreamed of building a steam
car, but neither could afford it. De Dion, already inspired by steam (though in
the form of rail locomotives) and
with plenty of money, agreed, and De Dion Bouton was
formed in Paris in 1883. This became the De Dion-Bouton automobile company, the
world's largest automobile
manufacturer for a time, becoming
well known for their quality, reliability, and durability.
The Marquis de Dion entered one of these in an 1887
trial, "Europe's first motoring competition", the brainchild of one M. Fossier of cycling magazine Evidently, the promotion was
insufficient, for the De Dion was the sole entrant, but it completed the
course, with de Dion at the tiller, and was clocked at 60 km/h
(37 mph). This must be taken
with considerable care; the first official lland speed record, set in 1898, was 63.15 km/h (39.24 mph). The
vehicle survives, in road-worthy condition, and has been a regular entry in the London to Brighton Veteran Car
Run.
68)de tomaso pantera:
The Pantera was a sports car produced by the De Tomaso car company of Italy from 1971 to 1991, the last one being delivered to a
customer in 1992.
The word "Pantera" is
Italian for "Panther"
The car was designed by American designer Tom Tjaarda and replaced the De Tomaso Mangusta. Unlike the Mangusta, which employed a steel backbone chassis, the Pantera was a steel monocoque design, the first instance of De Tomaso using this
construction technique. The Pantera logo included a version of Argentina's flag
turned on its side with a T-shaped symbol that was the brand used by De Tomaso's Argentinian
cattle ranching ancestors.
69)delachapelle:
The De
La Chapelle family have an historic automobile legacy with the Stimula marque.
In 1998 they created the Roadster, their second own creation.
They also make mini real-cars for
children.
The Replicas are powered by BMW (Straight-6),
the Roadster by Peugeot (Straight-4/V6) and the concept car by Mercedes (V8/V12).
74)denza: Denza (officially Shenzhen
BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd.) is an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Shenzhen, China specialised in electric cars and a joint venture between BYD Auto and Daimler
AG.
The first Denza production model
is planned to be launched in 2013, and,
while it is a sedan not a hatchback, the
car is based upon the Mercedes-Benz
B-Class platform.
On 1 March 2010 BYD Auto and
Daimler AG signed a memoranda of understanding for the joint development of
electric vehicles. This initial
link-up led to the creation of a new legal entity, Shenzhen BYD Daimler New
Technology Co., Ltd., which was formally established on 27 May 2010 and received a business license from
the Chinese State in March 2011. The brand name the company will sell
under, Denza, was debuted to the public in March 2012, and a concept car, the New Energy
Vehicle, was shown in April 2012 at the Auto
China motor show in Beijing.
70)deronda:
Deronda Limited was set up in March 2002
specifically to develop a high quality road car with extreme performance. The
result is the Deronda Type F, a dream come true for every sports car
enthusiast. This artwork is actually one of the latest and most successful
blends of passenger and race car, influenced by Formula 1 and designed to give
high quality performance with safety as its mission. All this makes this racer
an absolute sensation on road and rightly called “A Le Mans car through the
ages”.
71)Detroit:
The Detroit
Automobile Company (DAC) was
an early American automobil
manufacturer founded on August 5, 1899, in Detroit, Michigan. It was the
first venture of its kind in Detroit. Automotive
mechanic Henry Ford attracted the financial backing of three investors; Detroit
Mayor William Maybury, William H. Murphy, and Senator Thomas W. Palmer. As with many early car ventures, the company floundered
and was dissolved in January 1901
The company was founded with a
paid-up capital of $15,000 ($369,205 in 2007). Henry Ford managed the manufacturing
plant at 1343 Cass Avenue, Amsterdam in Detroit; initially with no pay until he
left his job at the Detroit Edison
Company, after which he was given a monthly salary of
$150 ($3,692 in 200. He refused
to put a car into production until he had perfected it to his satisfaction, infuriating investors who quickly
began to lose confidence in Ford's ability to bring a product to market. The company's primary objective was to
make a profit for its investors, who had seen the Oldsmobile plant, where the Curved
Dash Oldsmobile was built which was profitable for its owner Samuel Smith.
The company's first product was a
gasoline-powered delivery truck engineered by Ford and completed in January
1900. It received favorable
coverage in a local newspaper, but was not without its flaws; it was slow,
heavy, unreliable and complicated to manufacture. Later in life, Ford recalled this
period as one that was driven by profit rather than innovation
72)dino:
Dino was a brand for mid-engined, rear-drive sports cars produced by Ferrari from 1968 to 1976. The Dino brand was meant to be used for
cars with engines that had fewer than 12 cylinders, reserving the Ferrari name
for the V-12 and flat
12 models. The Dino name was retired after that point, in
favour of conventional Ferrari branding. The Dino brand was an attempt by
Ferrari to produce a relatively low-cost sports car.
The Dino models used Ferrari
racing naming designation of displacement and cylinder count with two digits
for the size of the engine in deciliters and the third digit to represent the
number of cylinders, i.e., 246 being a 2.4-litre 6-cylinder and 308 being a
3.0-litre 8-cylinder. Ferrari street models of the time used a three-digit
representation of the displacement in cubic centimeters of one of the 12
cylinders, which would have been meaningless in a brand with differing numbers
of cylinders.
The Dino 246 was the first
Ferrari model produced in high numbers. It is lauded by many for its intrinsic
driving qualities and groundbreaking design. In 2004, Sports Car International placed the car at number six on its list of Top Sports Cars of the 1970s. Motor
Trend Classic placed the 206/246 at number seven in their list of the 10
"Greatest Ferraris of all time".
The name "Dino" honors the founder's late son, Alfredo
"Dino" Ferrai, who was credited with the
design of the V6 engine. Along with famed engineer, Vittorio Jano, Dino influenced Enzo
Ferrari's decision to produce a line of racing cars in the 1950s, with V6 and
V8 engine designs. History shows that Alfredo Ferrari did not have a hand in
the actual design of the V6 motor that made its way into the Dino.
The "Dino" brand was
created to market a lower priced, "affordable" sports car. The first
brochure described the Dino as "almost a Ferrari". Ferrari intended
to do battle in the marketplace with Porsche and its 911. The more expensive
road going Ferrari V12's of the time were no match at their much higher price point.
But Enzo did not want to diminish the Ferrari brand with a cheaper car, and so
"Dino" was born.
In addition to being a lower
priced, "affordable" sports car, it was a car built in Alfredo's
honor after he lost his battle with muscular dystrophy. While in hospital, he
discussed technical details with the engineer Vittorio Jano. Dino would never
see the engine; he died on June 30, 1956 at the age of only 24, before his
namesake automobiles Fiat Dino and Dino were produced.
73)DKW:
DKW is a defunct German car and motor cycle marque. The name derives from Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (English: steam-driven car).
In 1916, the Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen founded
a factory in Zschopau, Saxony,
Germany, to produce steam fittings. In the same year, he attempted to produce a
steam-driven car, called the DKW. Although unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy engine in 1919, called Des Knaben Wunsch—"the
boy's desire". He also put a slightly modified version of this engine into
a motorcycle and called it Das
Kleine Wunder—"the little marvel". This was the real beginning of
the DKW brand: by the 1930s, DKW was the world's largest motorcycle
manufacturer.
In 1932, DKW merged with Audi, Horch and Wanderer, to form the Auto
Union. Auto Union came under Daimler-Benz ownership in 1957, and was then purchased by the Volkswagen Group in 1964. The last German built DKW car was the F102 which ceased production in 1966.
DKW badged cars continued to be
built under license in Brazil and Argentina until, respectively, 1967 and 1969.
DKW cars were made from 1928 until 1966, apart from an
interruption caused by war. DKWs always used two-stroke
engines, reflecting the company's position by the end
of the 1920s as the world's largest producer of motorbikes. The first DKW passenger
car, the small and rather crude
emerged on 7 May 1928, and the model continued to be built at
the company's Spandau(Berlin) plant first as a roadster and later as a stylish
of basic sports car until 1931.
74)dodge:
Dodge is a United States-based brand of automobiles, minivans, and sport utility
vehicles, manufactured by Chrysler Group LLC, a multinational manufacturer in a global strategic alliance with Fiat, in more than 60 different countries
and territories worldwide.
Founded as the Dodge Brothers Company in 1900 to supply parts and assemblies
for Detroit's growing auto
industry, Dodge began making its own complete
vehicles in 1915. The brand was sold to Chrysler Corporation in 1928, passed
through the short-lived DaimlerChrysler merger of 1998–2007 as part of the Chrysler Group, was a part of
Chrysler LLC owned by Cerberus
Capital Management, a private equity investment firm, and is now a part of the Chrysler Group
LLC, which has an alliance with Fiat. Fiat has plans to evolve many Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep
existing platforms and products into Fiat-Chrysler co-developed vehicles.
After the founding of the Dodge Brothers Company by Horace and John Dodge in 1900, the Detroit-based company quickly found work
producing precision engine and chassis components for the city’s burgeoning number of automobile
firms. Chief among these customers were the established Olds Motor Vehicle Company and the then-new Ford
Motor Company. Dodge Brothers enjoyed much success in
this field, but the brothers' growing wish to build complete vehicles was
exemplified by John Dodge's 1913 exclamation that he was "tired of being
carried around in Henry
Ford's vest pocket."
75)dongfeng motor corporation:
Dongfeng
Motor Corporation is a
Chinese state-owned automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Wuhan, China.
Traditionally included as one of the "big 3" Chinese automakers, Dongfeng is currently in the top 4
along with Chang'an Motos,FAW
Group, and SAIC
Motor. As
well as buses, trucks, and cars, it
also manufactures parts and
cooperates with foreign car makers. As of 2011 it has more Sino-foreign joint
ventures than any other Chinese automaker.
It was the second-largest Chinese
automaker in 2012 by production volume, and Dongfeng manufactured over 2.8
million whole vehicles this year.
Known as "Second Automobile Works" until 1992, Dongfeng, or "East Wind" in
Chinese, was founded in 1969. Its
origins lie in a dictate of Chairman Mao Zedong; as part of his "Third Front" strategy, its far inland location in Hubei Province was meant to protect it from foreign invasion. Traditionally manufacturing commercial
vehicles, by 2001 these made up about 73% of Dongfeng's production.
76)donkervoort:
Donkervoort Automobielen BV is a
manufacturer of authentic hand-built and ultra light weight sports cars based in Lelystad in The Netherlands. This car brand was founded in 1978 by Joop Donkervoort.
In 1996, Donkervoort's Ford engines were replaced by Audi engines. Donkervoorts motto - "No Compromise" -
means driving without any electronic aids such as ABS (Anti-lock braking
system), Electronic
stability program (ESP) or power steering.
77)ducenberg:
Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company, Inc. (sometimes referred to as "Duesy") was an American
manufacturer of luxury automobiles. Founded in Des
Moines, Iowa, United States by brothers August Duesenberg andFrederick Duesenberg,
the company's principal place of operations moved to Auburn, Indiana.
Duesenberg was active in various forms from 1913 to 1937.
In 1913, brothers Frederick and August Duesenberg founded Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company, Inc. on
915 Grand Avenue in Des
Moines, Iowa, to build sports cars. Born in 1876 and 1879 respectively in Kirchheide (Lemgo), Germany,
the two brothers were self-taught engineers and built many experimental cars.
Duesenberg cars were considered some of the very best cars of the time, and
were built entirely by hand. In 1914, Eddie
Rickenbacker drove a "Duesy" to finish in 10th place at the Indianapolis 500, and a Duesenberg won the race in 1924, 1925, and 1927.
The fledgling company sidestepped into aviation engine manufacturing when Colonel R.C. Bolling and his commission acquired a license to produce the Bugatti U-16 for the U.S. military aviation. The
end of World War I stopped this project before it could ever mature.
In 1923, drivers at Indianapolis
500 used Duesenbergs as pace cars. In 1921, Jimmy
Murphy became the first American to win the French Grand Prix when he drove a Duesenberg to victory at the Le Mans racetrack.
78)Durant motors:
Durant
Motors Inc. was
established in 1921 by former General Motors CEO William
"Billy" Durant following his
termination by the GM board of directors and the New York bankers that financed
GM
The Lansing, Michigan,
Durant plant on Verlinden Avenue opened in 1920. After the demise of Durant, it
remained closed until GM purchased it in 1935. It restarted production for GM's Fisher Body division, later becoming the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac
factory. It was finally combined with another Lansing plant to become Lansing Car Assembly. That factory was closed on May 6, 2005.
Durant's former plant in Elizabeth, New Jersey housed one of the first supermarkets in the 1930s, then was
used as a cookie bakery by Burry
Biscuits for many years. It was in use as a warehouse when it was
destroyed by fire in December 2011.
Billy Durant died nearly broke at
age 85 in 1947, the same year as Henry Ford, age 83.
79)eagle:
Eagle was a marque of the Chrysler Corporation following the purchase of American
Motors Corporation (AMC) and aimed at the enthusiast driver.
Though short-lived, the Eagle Vision sedan sold in respectable numbers, while the sporty Eagle Talon sold more than 115,000 units.
Following the introduction of
General Motors' Saturn brand automobile, both Ford and Chrysler promised similar new brands designed to take
Saturn on with innovative design and building methods. In a press release by
then Chrysler Chairman Lee
Iacocca, it was indicated that Chrysler was working
on a car that would bow as the "Liberty". However, these plans never
reached fruition.
The Jeep/Eagle division of Chrysler Corporation was formed
after Chrysler's 1987 buyout of American Motors Corporation, or AMC. Chrysler's initial problem was that
unlike the Big Three, which had multiple brands under their Corporate name,
American Motors had sold passenger cars under its corporate initials of
"AMC" since 1970. Thus, without having a separate brand from the now
defunct company, Chrysler looked to re-brand the legacy vehicles inherited
through the purchase of AMC instead of trying to fold those outside designed
products into Chrysler's existing branch structure. The Eagle name was taken from the AMC Eagle, the last
of American Motors' wholly U.S.-designed vehicles. The vehicles were marketed
primarily by AMC dealers along with Jeep products.
Unlike Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth branded automobiles, Eagles eschewed the Chrysler Corporation
"pentastar" logo. Instead, all models prominently featured the Eagle
head logo,

81)elva:
Elva was a
sports and racing car manufacturing company based in Bexhill, then Hastings and Rye,
East Sussex, United
Kingdom. The company was founded in 1955 by Frank G.
Nichols. The name comes from the French phrase elle va ("she goes").
Frank Nichols's intention was to build a low-cost
sports/racing car, and a series of models were produced between 1954 and 1959.
The original model, based on the CSM car built nearby in Hastings by Mike
Chapman, used Standard Ten front suspension rather than Ford swing axles, and a Ford Anglia rear axle with an overhead-valve-conversion of a Ford 10
engine. About 25 were made. While
awaiting delivery of the CSM, Nichols finished second in a handicap race at
Goodwood on March 27, 1954, driving a Lotus. "From
racing a Ford-based CSM sports car in 1954, just for fun but nevertheless with
great success, Frank Nichols has become a component manufacturer. The
intermediate stage was concerned with the design of a special head, tried in
the CSM and the introduction of the Elva car which was raced with success in
1955." The cylinder head for
the 1,172 c.c. Ford engine, devised by Malcolm Witts and Harry Weslake, featured overhead inlet valves.

84)evante:
The Evante is an English automobile which began production in 1987 in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England. Engine tuning company Vegantune had been
restoring Lotus Elan cars and making some improvements to them. They decided to build
a complete new car and set up a separate company, Evante Cars Ltd, to make
them.
The car's looks were heavily
inspired by the Lotus Elan and it was powered by the Ford Kent based
Vegantune VTA 1.6 and later 1.7 litre twin overhead cam engine driving the
rear wheels through a gearbox originally from a Ford Sierra. The fibreglass body and carbon-fibre was mounted onto a space
frame chassis with independent
suspension all round. Disc
brakes were fitted front and rear.
The cars were intended to be
available as either complete or in kit form but all cars were supplied fully built and were
produced at a rate of about one a week. The bodies were well fitted out with
leather seats, walnut dashboard and electric windows.
Production stopped in 1991 when
the original company failed but the design was bought by Fleur de Lys who
specialised in making retro styled vans. They redeveloped the car to take a
Ford Zetec 1.8 Litre engine but only nine more cars
were made.
An attempt was made to revive the
car in 2001, but this was unsuccessful.
85)Facel vega:
Facel was a French manufacturer of automobiles from 1954 to 1964.
The company was named after the
original metal stamping company FACEL, and the company's first model, the Vega,
named after the star ,was introduced at the 1954 Paris Auto Show. The cars were advertised with the slogan For the Few Who Own the Finest.
Initially successful, the company
failed after the debut of its mechanically troubled Facellia model.
The marque Facel Vega was created in 1954 by Jean Daninos (brother of
the humorist Pierre
Daninos, who wrote Les
Carnets du Major Thompson), although the Facel
company had been established by the Bonzavia Company in 1939 as a
subcontracting company for the aviations industry. FACEL (Forges et Ateliers de
Construction d'Eure-et-Loir, in
English: forge and construction workshop of the department of Eure-et-Loir) was initially a metal-stamping company but decided to
expand into car manufacturing in the early 1950s. Facel entered the automobile
business as a supplier of special bodies for Panhard, Delahaye and Simca.
86)farbio:
The Ginetta F400, previously known
as the Farbio GTS, and
originally developed by Arash
Farboud as the Farboud GT, is a sports car made by the British Ginetta Cars company. It was the first Farboud and
Farbio planned for production until its sale to Ginetta in 2010.
The Farbio GTS was originally
conceived in 2002 as the Farboud GT with an Audi based engine. It was eventually launched in 2007
with sales from the beginning of 2008.
Three engine options were
offered, with the GTS 260, 350 and 400. The GTS 400 featuring a supercharged
3.0 litre Ford unit, produces 384 bhp (286 kW; 389 PS) and
providing a 0-60 mph of 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of over 175 mph
(282 km/h). The basic GTS 260 model with 262 bhp (195 kW;
266 PS) could accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
The F400 sold few when production
was halted in 2010 and the car underwent significant redevelopment to be
relaunched at the end of 2011 as the Ginetta
G60.
87)Ferrari:
Ferrari S.p.A. is a multinational Italian sports car manufacturer
based in Maranello, Italy. Founded by Enzo
Ferrari in 1929, as Scuderia
Ferrari, the company sponsored drivers and manufactured race cars before
moving into production of street-legal vehicles as Ferrari S.p.A. in 1947. Throughout its history, the company has been noted
for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula
One, where it has had great success. Ferrari road
cars are generally seen as a symbol of luxury and wealth.
Enzo Ferrari was not initially
interested in the idea of producing road cars when he formed Scuderia Ferrari
(literally "Ferrari Stable", and usually used to mean "Team
Ferrari", in 1928 as a sponsor for amateur drivers headquartered in Modena. Ferrari
prepared, and successfully raced, various drivers in Alfa Romeo cars until 1938, when he was hired by Alfa Romeo to head
their motor racing department.
In 1941, Alfa Romeo was
confiscated by the fascist government of Benito
Mussolini as part of the Axis
Powers' war effort. Enzo Ferrari's division was small
enough to be unaffected by this. Because he was prohibited by contract from
racing for four years, the Scuderia briefly became Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari, which ostensibly produced machine tools and aircraft
accessories. Also known as SEFAC (Scuderia Enzo Ferrari Auto Corse), Ferrari did in fact produce
one race car, the Tipo 815, in
the non-competition period. It was the first actual Ferrari car (it debuted at
the 1940 Mille Miglia), but due to World War II it saw little competition. In
1943 the Ferrari factory moved to Maranello, where it has remained ever since.
The factory was bombed by the Allies in 1944 and rebuilt in 1946, after the war ended, and
included a works for road car production.
In 1988, Enzo Ferrari oversaw the
launch of the Ferrari F40, the last new Ferrari to be launched before his death
later that year, and arguably one of the most famous supercars ever made. From 2002 to 2004, Ferrari produced the Enzo.
The Enzo was Ferrari's fastest model at the time, and was introduced and named
in honor of the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari (Although it was to be called
the F60, continuing on from the F40 and F50, but Ferrari was so pleased with
it, they called it the Enzo instead). It was initially offered to loyal and
reoccurring customers, each of the 399 made (minus the 400th which was donated
to the Vatican for charity) had a price tag of $650,000 apiece.
In 2012, September 15, 964
Ferrari cars (worth over $162million) attended the Ferrari Driving Days event
at Silverstone Circuit and paraded round theSilverstone Circuit and set the World Record.
88)fiat:
Fiat
S.p.A., (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin), is an
Italian automobile
manufacturer based in Turin. Fiat was founded in 1899 by a group of investors
including Giovanni Agnelli. During its more than a century long history, Fiat has
also manufactured railway engines and carriages, military vehicles, and aircraft. As of 2009, the Fiat group (not inclusive
of its subsidiary Chrysler) was the world's ninth largest carmaker and the largest in
Italy.
Fiat-based cars are built around
the world. Outside Italy, the largest country of production is Brazil, where
the Fiat brand is the market leader. The
group also has factories in Argentina and Poland and a long history of
licensing production of its products in other countries. It also has numerous
alliances and joint ventures around the world, the main ones being located in
Italy, France, Turkey, Serbia, India and China.
Giovanni Agnelli founded F.I.A.T. in 1899 (changed to upper-
and lower-case Fiat in 1906) with
several investors and led the company until his death in 1945, while Vittorio Valletta administered
the firm's daily activities. Its first car the 3 ½ CV (of which only eight copies were built, all bodied by Alessio of Turin) strongly resembled contemporary Benz, and had a 697 cc
(42.5 cu in) boxer twin engine. In
1903, Fiat produced its first truck. In
1908, the first Fiat was exported to the US. That
same year, the first Fiat aircraft engine was produced. Also around the same
time, Fiat taxis became popular in Europe. By
1910, Fiat was the largest automotive company in Italy
95)fisker karma:
The Fisker Karma is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports
sedan produced by Fisker
Automotive and manufactured at Valmet Automotive in Finland. The United
States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated
the Karma's combined city/highway fuel
economy at 52 mpg-US(4.5 L/100 km;
62 mpg-imp) equivalent
(MPG-e) in all-electric
mode, and at 20 mpg-US (12 L/100 km; 24 mpg-imp)
in gasoline-only mode. EPA's official all-electric
range is 32 mi (51 km). Due to the very small cabin interior
volume, the EPA rated the Fisker Karma as a subcompact.
After missing its initial late
2009 launch, and after the launch was rescheduled several times, the first
deliveries took place in the U.S. in late July 2011, and deliveries to retail customers
began in November 2011. Since
December 2011 pricing in the U.S. starts atUS$102,000 for the basic model, and US$116,000 for the top model. Fisker reported that around 1,500
units have been delivered in the U.S. and Europe by September 2012.
The Fisker Karma was revealed at
the 2008 North American
International Auto Show in Detroit. It is the first car from Fisker Automotive, a new auto maker
based in Anaheim, California, founded on 5 September 2007.
Production began in July 2011, and the first two deliveries took
place in the United States on July 26, 2011. In
October 2011 the first Karma delivered in the UK was auctioned to benefit Pratham UK and raised a bid of GB£140,000 (around US$220,000)
The Karma is a pure series hybrid, driven by a pair of 120 kW (161 hp) electric
motors that get their power from a 20 kWh lithium
ion battery supplied byA123 Systems.
The battery pack runs down the center of the car, between the pairs of
left-hand and right-hand seats, preventing a rear bench and seating four rather
than five passengers. Once the battery is depleted, or when the driver presses
the "Sport" mode button, the front-mounted 260-hp, 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder direct-injected and turbocharged gasoline engine powers a generator that sends electricity
directly to the drive motors. The engine is sourced from General Motors. Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Karma's engine is mated with a generator to provide
an electrical connection to the motors and also recharge the batteries, and as
such the electric motors are the only mechanical driving force connected to the
wheels. However, in all-electric mode, the Karma is around half as efficient as the Volt. The proprietary Q-Drive hybrid drive
train is supplied by Quantum Technologies, which operates in a joint venture
with Fisker Coachbuild known as Fisker Automotive. The Karma's curb weight is 5,300 lb (2,400 kg)
96)force:

venture, Man Force Trucks Pvt. Ltd, withMAN AG of Germany.] MAN Force trucks are exported overseas to countries such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and certain African nations; markets where a low selling
price is essential. The JV was dissolved as on March 2012 with Force Motors
having sold and transferred remaining 50% of Man Force shares to MAN AG for Rs
10 per share.
97)ford:
Ford Motor Company is an American multinational automaker
headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16,
1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand
and luxury cars under the Lincoln brand.

Ford introduced methods for large-scale manufacturing of
cars and large-scale management of an industrial workforce using elaborately
engineered manufacturing sequences typified by moving assembly
lines; by 1914 these methods were known around the world as Fordism.
Ford's former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land
Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to Tata
Motors in
March 2008. Ford owned the Swedish automaker Volvo from
1999 to 2010. In 2011, Ford discontinued the Mercury brand,
under which it had marketed entry-level luxury cars in the United States since
1938.
Henry Ford's first attempt at a car company under his own
name was the Henry
Ford Company on
November 3, 1901, which became the Cadillac Motor Company on
August 22, 1902 after Ford left with the rights to his name. The Ford Motor
Company was launched in a converted factory in 1903 with $28,000 in cash from
twelve investors, most notably John and Horace
Dodge (who
would later found their own car company). During its early
years, the company produced just a few cars a day at its factory on Mack Avenue
in Detroit, Michigan.
Groups of two or three men worked on each car, assembling it from parts made
mostly by supplier companies contracting for Ford. Within a decade the company
would lead the world in the expansion and refinement of the assembly
line ,concept; and Ford soon brought much of the part production
in-house in a vertical
integration that
seemed a better path for the era.
Henry Ford was 40 years old when he founded the Ford Motor
Company, which would go on to become one of the world's largest and most
profitable companies, as well as being one to survive the Great
Depression. As one of the largest family-controlled companies in the
world, the Ford Motor Company has been in continuous family control for over
100 years.
In 1908 Ford introduced the first engine with a removable
cylinder head, in the Model T. In 1930, Ford introduced the Model
A, the first car with safety glass in the windshield. Ford launched the first low priced V8 engine
powered car in 1932.
Ford offered the Lifeguard safety package from 1956, which
included such innovations as a standard deep-dish steering wheel, optional
front, and, for the first time in a car, rear seatbelts, and an optional padded
dash. Ford introduced child-proof door locks into
its products in 1957, and in the same year offered the first retractable
hardtop on a mass-produced six-seater car. The Ford Mustang was introduced in
1964. In 1965 Ford introduced the seat belt reminder light.
With the 1980s, Ford introduced several highly successful
vehicles around the world. In 1990 and 1994 respectively, Ford also acquired Jaguar
Cars andAston Martin. During the mid- to late 1990s, Ford continued
to sell large numbers of vehicles, in a booming American economy
with a soaring stock market and low fuel prices.
With the dawn of the new century, legacy healthcare costs,
higher fuel prices, and a faltering economy led to falling market shares,
declining sales, and diminished profit margins. Most of the corporate profits
came from financing consumer automobile loans through Ford
Motor Credit Company.
98)fournier
marcadier:
André Marcadier's career took a decisive step when ,
in the early 1960's, he met a person who was beginning to make a name for
himself in motor sport circles: none other than Colin Chapman, founder of
Lotus, To make motor sport in France an affordable activity, it was necessary,
as the English had done, to produce a small, two-seater tubular-chassis sports
car incorporating a cheap, small-capacity mass-produced engine. To keep co ts
down , this would be sold as a kit.
Marcadier got together with a local-panel-beater, Marcel Founier, and together they created ’Fournier-Marcadier ’. Lat the end of 1963 they launched what was to become France's first "kit" sports car", This was a two-seater with an elegant open-top fibreglass body, not unlike the Lotus 23. The engine was located centrally in a superb tubular chassis, which was remarkably sophisticated taking into account the low-cost aim.
3600 enquiries flowed in from prospective purchasers and other interested parties. The model became a great success in competition: Sport-Auto magazine organised a championship around it, From 1966 onwards, the two colleagues launched a single-seater to take part in the national championships which eventually became known as Formule France.
Like the sports car, it was very light (320 kgs), with a well-designed chassis. The engine was from the Renault 8 Major, which had enough power to make the car quite lively, as testified by Jean-Pierre Beltoise in a test he did for Sport-Auto.

Very shortly afterwards, the car was fitted with a
Renault 8 Gordini engine, and achieved several excellent results in Formula
Libre in the hands of Roger Cohen, the "works" driver. It even took
overall honours against Formula 3
99)frazer nasch:
Frazer Nash was a British sports car manufacturer and
engineering company founded by Archibald Frazer-Nash in 1922. It
produced sports cars incorporating a unique multi-chain transmission before the Second World War, and also
imported BMW cars to the UK. After the war it continued
producing sports cars with conventional transmission until 1957. It also
continued selling BMW cars and motorcycles and finally in 1956 became the
official importer of Porsche cars.
The
company was founded in 1922 by Archibald Frazer-Nash who had, with Henry Ronald
Godfrey founded and run the GN cyclecar company. The company was established in Kingston
upon Thames, Surrey, moving to Isleworth, Middlesex in 1929. The company entered
receivership in 1927 and re-emerged as AFN Limited. The majority of AFN was
acquired by H. J. ("Aldy") Aldington in 1929 and run by the three
Aldington brothers, H.J., Donald A. and William H. Aldy's son, John Taylor
("JT") Aldington was the last of the family owners/directors until
AFN Ltd was sold to Porsche GB. The company produced around 400 of the famous chain
drive models between 1924 and 1939.
AFN,
Ltd became importers and assemblers of BMW cars in 1934 and sold them as Frazer Nash-BMW. They were the
official British BMW importer until the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1954 the
company started to sell Porsche cars, becoming the official
importer for Great Britain in 1956. This lasted until 1965 when Porsche Cars
Great Britain was set up; Aldington family members remained on the board of
this company until John Adlington sold out to Porsche in 1987, Nash
& Thompson was formed in 1929 by Archibald
Frazer-Nash and E. Grattan Thompson to develop the Frazer-Nash hydraulic
aircraft gun
turret
During
the Second World War, Nash & Thompson was involved in armaments production
with its turrets in use on British bombers such
as the Avro
Lancaster and Vickers Wellington. There
are several successor companies still (as of 2011) active in engineering
consultancy (Frazer-Nash
Consultancy),
engineering (Frazer-Nash (Midhurst) Ltd. and electric & hybrid vehicle technology
(Frazer-Nash Research, owned by the Kamkorp Group, which also owns Bristol
Cars).
AFN Ltd
produced about 85 more cars from 1948 to 1957. These cars were entirely
unrelated to the chain-drive pre-war Frazer Nash, but were largely a direct
evolution of the sporting BMW 328, mentioned above. AFN, as owners of the UK
rights to the 328 engine licensed Bristol to make it against an agreement for
its supply to them. Models include the Le Mans Replica, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Le Mans Coupé and the Sebring. Competition successes included a third place at Le
Mans (1949) and wins in the Targa Florio (1951) and the 12
Hours of Sebring,
1952. The post-war cars are very highly prized by collectors. The company
participated in the 1952 Formula One season, the cars driven by Tony
Crook and Ken
Wharton.
100)freightliner:
Freightliner
Trucks is an
American manufacturer of heavy duty trucks, chassis and semi-trailer
trucks in the United States. The company was founded as Freightliner Inc in 1942 and is now a division of
Daimler Trucks North America, a subsidiary of the German Daimler AG. The company
is known mainly for the heavy duty class
8 diesel trucks it produces, as well as classes 5-7 trucks.
As of 2005, Freightliner is the
largest manufacturer of heavy duty trucks in North America with annual revenue of over $32 billion (2012 est.) and
over 24,000 employees (including Detroit
Diesel). Because Freightliner LLC is a wholly owned
subsidiary of Daimler, a non-American corporation, it is not included in Fortune 500 rankings. It is comparable to the 125th largest company in
those rankings based on the criteria used.
In the 1930s, Consolidated
Freightways decided to produce their own truck line from reconstructed Fageols,
after finding most heavy trucks had insufficient power to climb the steep
grades in the mountain regions of the western United
States. The trucks were branded
"Freightliners", with the first units produced in Consolidated
Freightways' maintenance facility in Salt Lake City around 1942. After
production was interrupted during WWII, manufacturing began again, in CF's home
of Portland, OR. In 1949, the first truck sold outside of Consolidated
Freightways went to forklift manufacturer Hyster,
also based in Portland. Today,
that truck is in the Smithsonian collection in Washington, D.C.
